Top Reasons Waxahachie is a Great Town to Live In

The Historic Residential DistrictI’ve travelled all across the country and have NEVER seen a larger historic for such a quaint town. Many of the homes have been restored, but many sit unaltered from the day they were built in the early 1900s.

Historic CourthouseAs the seat of Ellis County, Waxahachie boasts one of the most beautiful courthouses ever seen. It is a legend that the builder created beautiful carvings of a local woman on the courthouse, but when she rejected his courtship, he started to create more dark and sinister carvings.

Waxahachie Historic Downtown SquareShops, shops & more shops! I’ll admit, I’m a huge fan of small-town boutiques. The Waxahachie Square gives places like Fredericksburg and Wimberley a run for their money. With Waxahachie only being 25 miles from Dallas, it’s the perfect Saturday day trip…or even better, it’s the perfect move! Waxahachie also has a seasonal farmer’s market located downtown.

ConvenienceEverything you need is here – Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, JC Penney, Hastings, Hobby Lobby, and Best Buy – not to mention, a ton of dining options. The shops keep growing too – a new shopping center just opened with TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, Kirkland’s and more. Not to mention more restaurants.

Getzendaner ParkIf you have young children, you understand the importance of a nice park that’s close by. Getzendaner captures everything I look for in a park – huge shade trees, clean restrooms, a variety of play equipment (that isn’t rusted) and a beautiful atmosphere. Getzendaner Park is 27 acres big and filled with Oak and Pecan trees. It is split by Waxahachie Creek. The best thing? Getzendaner Park is at the end of a 6-mile long hike & bike trail that follows Waxahachie Creek.

Waxahachie Creek Hike & Bike TrailThis 6-mile-long hike & bike trail follows Waxahachie Creek, so the majority of the trail is shaded by large established trees that follow the creek. On one end of this trail is Getzendaner Park and on the other end is the Lions Park. Along the trail, you’ll spot A dog park, a cemetery, train tracks, a baseball field, a city basketball court, the old train bridge and the rodeo grounds. In the spring, you’ll see many families or seniors taking photos along the trail.

Small Town CharmThe nicest people. Something you rarely think about in the city, but only notice when you’re in a small town. I was in awe at how nice everyone treated others in Waxahachie. Everyone treats you like their neighbour. And everyone KNOWS their neighbours!

Scarborough FairWhile only for a short time, the Scarborough Fair is North Texas’ largest renaissance festival. With over 200 shops and hundreds of people dressed up in Renaissance attire, it’s a fun time for all ages.

Waxahachie SchoolsAs of this post, Waxahachie has over 8,000 students and 13 campuses. Waxahachie is known for its great school system and has all of the programs and extracurriculars you would expect. Global High School is an early-college prep and STEM school that emphasizes an education in math, science and engineering. This school was ranked one of the top high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Location – Waxahachie has an extremely convenient location. Located 25 miles South of Dallas on 35E, Waxahachie provides an easy commute for those that work in the ‘big city’. US 287 also runs through Waxahachie, providing an easy way to get to I-45 or 67. No matter where you’re going, Waxahachie seems to be conveniently located.
